PUBLIC EDUCATION
To
accommodate the diverse ways the public uses the Nature Park, the
Academy has developed a variety of events that we hope will appeal
to every age and interest level. To see the specific dates of some
of the events listed below, click on the calendar link at the bottom
of this page. We think there is something for everyone to do at
the Swamp! If you have any suggestions for an additional event we
can offer, or would like information about any of the events below,
please call our offices at 706-828-2109.
SWAMP
SATURDAYS
Swamp
Saturdays provide a guided, introductory
walk around the Nature Park, and are held the first Saturday of
each month. They include a 2.5-mile relaxing hike around a loop
of trails within the Nature Park. Volunteer tour leaders start the
tours at 9:30 am from the parking lot, and return to the parking
lot at approximately 11:00 am. Tours are free and open to the public,
and no reservation is required unless you are planning on bringing
a group of 10 or more. Click
on "Calendar" to see upcoming Swamp Saturday dates.
What
to bring:
Binoculars, camera, hat, water, bug spray, and comfortable, closed-toe
shoes. Strollers have accompanied Swamp Saturday groups, but must
be carried up a small set of stairs and pass over gravel during
part of the tour.
ECO-CAMPS
During
the month of June, the Academy offers nature camps at Phinizy Swamp
Nature Park for kids from five to fourteen years old. Camps feature
nature hikes, crafts, games, and enviornmentally-based activities
lead by Academy staff and volunteers. Each attendee will receive
a t-shirt, and crafts will go home with the campers as well!
OTHER ACTIVITIES
For outdoor activity
enthusiasts, we offer an annual Swamp Stomp 5K (held in conjunction
with Earth Day) and periodic family bike rides.
For scouts, we offer
paid group tours, free Swamp Saturday tours (if you book early),
and occasional special scout days.
For the adventurous,
we offer moonlight nature hikes & special meteor viewings!
For families, we offer
monthly Family Discovery Series, Swamp Saturday tours, and summer
dusk walks. And don't forget about our annual Earth Day Augusta
celebration!
