Rubric Philosophy

Rubrics are a scoring scale that provide evaluation and assessment for both students and teachers.

Each program rubric is based on a 4-point scale, with 4 being the highest level of content mastery and 1 being a minimal mastering of the content.

For the purpose of evaluation, these rubrics were written so that teachers can provide a general assessment of student content mastery before and after the field trip.

How to Use these Rubrics

Before starting your teacher preparation, scroll down to read the rubric for the field trip you are going to attend and assess the level of content mastery your class (on the average) currently has.

After the field trip and any follow-up activities, re-assess the content mastery of your class and once again record the average score of your class.

On the field trip evaluation (which will be given to you on the day of your field trip), circle the pre- and post-scores (1 to 4) for your class.

Any form of assessment can be used to determine the rubric score, as long as you believe it is an accurate reflection of your classes’ knowledge.

BUG MANIA

Level 4

Student can accurately list at least five characteristics of insects and can accurately list ten examples of macroinvertebrates.
Student can describe what aquatic macroinvertebrates are, understands that some are pollution tolerant and some are pollution intolerant species, and can describe how this is related to assessment of stream health.
Student understands the differences between complete and incomplete metamorphous and can list the different stages of each life cycle.

Level 3

Student can accurately list at least four characteristics of insects and can accurately list five examples of macroinvertebrates.
Student can describe what aquatic macroinvertebrates are and understands that diversity of these organisms is an indicator of stream health (without necessarily knowing why).
Student understands the differences between complete and incomplete metamorphous and can list some of the stages of each life cycle.

Level 2

Student can accurately list at least three characteristics of insects and can only accurately list three examples of macroinvertebrates.
Student has a slightly inaccurate definition for aquatic macroinvertebrates and does not realize that diversity of these organisms can indicate stream health.
Student understands metamorphous but not the differences between complete and incomplete and has trouble listing the different stages of each life cycle.

Level 1

Student has difficulty listing characteristics or examples of insects with accuracy.
Student has an inaccurate definition for aquatic macroinvertebrates and does not understand how their assessment can relate to stream health.
Student does not understand metamorphous or the different stages in the life cycle.
